iAd or iMinus?

With the recent conference from apple over the release of iPhone OS 4.0, Steve Jobs had demoed the new platform for producing advertisements in applications called iAd. To many this announcement come as a massive drawback, saying that it will bring the annoying features that advertisement platforms usually bring along that many free applications already in place in application around the Appstore.

But to be honest, too some (espesically developers of free applications), it will be a welcome addition to the iPhone family. Apple have done their research and will not going into this with all finger and no thumbs, one example of this is at the moment if a developer wants to include advertisements into their application let say to keep their application free they no longer need to incorporate a third party platform like Adwhirl where if a user taps on an advertisement they will be dragged out of the current application and presented with a website or Appstore page for the advertisement. With iAd it keeps the user in the application and overlay the advert in possibly a nice HTML5 way where it can bring the user an mini application of sorts, where a user can at anytime close the Ad at anytime (notice the X on the top left of the example below) and carry on as normal.

This for me as an avid Appstore user is defiantly happy to see come to the iPhone family a nice way for me to thank a developer in the form of generating him/her some revenue for the hard work they have done.

Increase home secruity by not posting dates online

Thinking of going away for the holiday season? Are you one to advertise on FaceBook the fact that you are one of the lucky ones, and actually managing to escape the dark and wet country? If so then you may be putting your home at risk!

FaceBook, Twitter and Linkedin all have the ability to post status updates for friends and family to see, however did you know that unless the right security is set up other can also see your updates? Take this in to consideration next time you go posting that your off on your holidays or that you’ve out seeing your favourite comedian. I’m not recommending you to stop posting your fun activities altogether just rethink what you would type, for example if I was going on holiday next week, I may have put something like “Woop! off to the big apple today! see you all in 2 weeks!”  or “Currently, in the Big Apple with the family and loving it”  putting specific times into the post is telling anyone that your leaving the country and that your house is more then likely going to empty for 2 weeks, or that the house at that moment is empty.

To reduce the risk, you may want to rethink your posts and leave out the status updates that  tell a person where exactly your and when, so your posts could be something like the following “Woop! off to the big apple soon, bet you’ll miss me?” now posting something along these lines is not saying exactly when you are off on holiday, so the “shifty” people among us only know that you are going away soon, not the exact date so they are less likely to attempt to break/damage your property as their unsure to when your next in. As for one day events try to refrain from posting that you are currently their as again the “Shifties”  among us are still going to be unsure when the house will exactly be empty but if you can’t avoid it make sure that you never post your address on-line that is publicly visible.

This may seem an extreme measure but in today’s world social networking is becoming an everyday occurrence in peoples life, this is bringing a  wave of criminal activities with it.

So this holiday season remember the following:

  • Don’t post date specific status updates when you are out and about.
  • If you do post date specific status make sure, that your address is hidden on-line.

Well that’s it from me, this is the first of what I hope to become a series of social networking blog posts, so let me know what you think and suggest other subject you’d like.

What social networking, topics would you like to see?
